This course introduces some key issues, ideas and concepts relevant for understanding modern and contemporary art. The course engages with critical theories that address the entanglements between modernity and coloniality, as well as modernity and fossil fuel economy. In the light of those critical views, current debates about decolonization in art and society will be discussed.

The course gives an insight into various artistic strategies and presents theoretical models how to conceptualise participatory art and the intersections between art and social change. The course will also focus on current artistic responses to climate urgency and engage with questions around body and dis/ability, illness and health, and accessibility.
